Use of DLC coatings

Superior component protection for the most demanding applications

Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coating based on amorphous carbon (a-C:H) is one of the most advanced surface protection technologies in the industry.

It is a coating that combines the properties of diamond and graphite, which enables exceptional wear resistance, low friction and high surface strength.

With DLC coatings, we can meet different variations, such as e.g. a-C:H:Si, which contains the addition of silicon for even better adaptation to specific industrial needs. Due to their exceptional properties, DLC coatings are widely used in the automotive, medical, aerospace and other industries.

Properties of DLC coatings

Exceptional wear resistance and strength: DLC coating provides high strength and wear resistance due to its amorphous carbon structure. This means that components protected by this coating last longer and are less subject to damage, even under intensive use. In the a-C:H:Si version, the addition of silicon further improves the sliding properties of the coating, which is useful for components subjected to high loads.

Low friction: One of the key properties of DLC coatings is a very low coefficient of friction. In sliding contact between the surfaces, the coating reduces friction, which in turn reduces wear and the need for lubricants. This feature is particularly important in the automotive industry, where reduced friction helps optimize engine performance and reduce fuel consumption.

Chemical inertness: DLC coatings are chemically inert, meaning they are resistant to corrosion and most chemicals. This is especially useful for components that are exposed to aggressive chemical influences or operate in demanding industrial environments.

Applications:

Automotive: DLC coatings are widely used on engine parts such as pistons, valves and cams. By reducing friction and improving wear resistance, the coating helps increase engine efficiency and reduce emissions and fuel consumption.

Medical Industry: Due to its biocompatibility and corrosion resistance, DLC coating is ideal for medical devices and implants such as surgical instruments, implants and dental appliances. Chemical inertness help reduce the risk of inflammation and improve the durability of medical devices.

Aerospace: DLC coatings protect components such as bearings, valves and control systems that are exposed to extreme conditions. The resistant structure of the coating allows the components to withstand high loads, vibrations and temperature changes.

Electronics and optics: DLC coatings are used to protect sensitive electronic components and optical devices. Because DLC coating reduces reflectivity and increases scratch resistance, it is an excellent choice for protecting lenses, screens and sensors.
